The Generous Crafters is a community-based group of fun-loving, caring people who craft hand-made items to be donated to nonprofit or service organizations that serve Lake County, Il., while developing friendships and supporting one another. We have no religious or political affiliation.
Hand made hats are always in great demand. And we love to knit and crochet them. One of the challenges is getting the measurements right.
There are 3 key measurements as you see from the picture above. As we donate hats for warmth, we need to ensure that the hat is tall/long enough to comfortably cover the ears.
The chart below gives you the general measurements for all sizes.
Please keep in mind that we do not collect preemie or newborn hats.
All you need to know about properly sizing a hat
BLANKET SIZE: The measurements below are based on the needs expressed by the organizations to which we donate. 1 or 2 inches up or down are acceptable.
Large Blanket: 60X72 or 50X64
Small Throw / Lapghan: 40X60 or 50X50
Baby Blankets: 35X35 or 30X40
NO SCRATCHY OR HOLEY: All our blankets are made for warmth and comfort. All blankets should be soft and cuddly. They should not made in stitches that create big holes where fingers, drafts, or medical equipment could get caught. Metallic, overly fuzzy yarn, stiff yarn is not suitable for the organizations to whom we donate. Ask yourself: "would I feel all cozy wrapped in this blanket?" "Is it easy to care for or wash?

Many of the hats we make are beautiful but may not be warm enough for the Chicago winters. One of our members shared this post on how to easily line a knitted hat with fleece.
